try backend RDMS + Notes....

Notes was made more for collaboration than a monster RDMS.

Two million is just a lot, and I would bet any RDMS system would run circles around Notes if all you are doing is query's or @dblookup-like calls.

(I have create MS Access databases that takes user's data with simple joins and where clauses to create reports in 10 seconds where the same data in MS Excel took over 2 hours.)

I would try exporting the data to a backend RDMS like DB2, Oracle, or SQL Server. Index it accordingly and properly for performance. If you can keep it on the same box, it will tax your CPU but save you networking calls. Then, use LEI if performance is important to connect to the information in Lotus Notes. (note, LEI can be much faster than ODBC if the LEI is using the native drivers.)
